Say goodbye to apple maggots feasting on your precious fruit trees with the Apple Maggot Trap. Lures not required.

Product Description

The Apple Maggot Trap (# 3033ORG) / Cherry Fruit Fly Trap can be used to protect your precious fruit trees from apple maggots who like to feast usually beginning from June through September.

Each Apple Maggot Trap includes:

  • 3 red plastic sphere traps, 3 hangers, and glue

NOTE: Lures are not included and not required for use with the Apple Maggot Trap since the glue will do most of the attracting.

By using the Apple Maggot Traps, you may eliminate the need to spray pesticides to control apple maggot flies. The flies are slightly smaller than a housefly. They emerge from the soil in early June to early September. These small flies have a black and white banding pattern on their wings. After being fertilized, the females wander over your apples, cherries, pears, plums, and blueberries, inserting eggs into the fruit. They also fly from tree to tree, although they usually do not move more than 200-300 yards at a time.

The white and yellow larvae, which are 1/4"-3/8" long, hatch under the skin of the fruit about 5-10 days later. They tunnel into the fruit, leaving brown marks throughout the fruit making it unpalatable. The larva will only live for 3-4 weeks, finishing their development on the fallen fruit and then emerging and borrowing into the soil to pupate. They will emerge as adult flies the following summer, or occasionally, they will remain in the pupae stage for 2 winters.

Sanitation is a good way to help control apple maggots. Fallen apples must be picked up within 1-2 days of falling down to the ground.

MONITOR: Use 1 trap/ 0.8-1.2 hectares (2-3 acres). Place the traps evenly around the perimeter of your orchard before the fruit appears. In areas where you have only a few trees, place a sticky trap on the south side of the tree at eye height by June 1st.

TRAP: Use 1-6 traps per tree (1 trap per bushel of apples expected). Recommend a minimum of 5 traps per block of trees. To treat 1 large fruit tree, use a minimum of 3 traps and lures and a minimum of 2 traps per dwarf fruit tree.

How to use: Assemble the red plastic spheres. Screw the hanger into the pre-drilled hole in the sphere. Open the glue container and apply the glue to the entire outside of the sphere. Spread the glue in a layer approximately 0.1 cm thick. Insects will stick to the outside of the sphere. Hang the trap in a fruit tree with twist ties.
