FYI

You need a different type of switch for battery and magneto ignitions because they have different operating principles. A battery uses an external power source to create the spark at the spark plug.It is usually a 12-volt battery and an external coil, like the 460-048. The switch controls the voltage to the coil via the I terminal. When the switch is in an "on" position, it sends 12 volts to the coil. When it is an "off" position, it doesn't send volts to the coil and will not allow it to create a spark.

Magneto ignitions need no external power source. The engine flywheel has a set of magnets built into it. As these magnets pass by the laminations of the coil, voltage builds up by the coil. It transfers this voltage to the spark plug and creates the spark. The switch acts as a ground mechanism for the magneto system via the M terminal. When the switch is in an "on" position, the system is not grounded and the voltage for the spark flows through to the plug. When the switch is in an "off" position, then the system is grounded and will not allow the spak voltage to get to the plug, and no spark is created. Diagrams of terminal placement accompany the key switches for easy identification.
